Jesus was NOT a refugee…?

I saw a car today with a bumper sticker. I thought it read “I was a refugee” and I thought, good for you! Then I realized it was signed “Jesus.”

A refugee, by definition, is a person who has been forced to leave their country in order to escape war, persecution, or natural disaster.

There was no war or natural disaster. Jesus was persecuted but He knew He was being persecuted, knew how and when, and didn’t flee. There is the argument that King Herrod ordered the slaughter of baby boys and so an angel told Joseph and Mary to hit the road with Jesus. I personally don’t count that as war, natural disaster, or persecution per se.

In the US we also require the person asking to be a refugee be unwilling and unable to return to their home country but the Bible says Jesus came back to Nazareth.
