Ambitious Bitches! How dare we?!?!

In the results of two separate studies in two separate countries (America and Sweden), the obvious was once again stated: men don’t like ambitious and/or successful women. The US study showed that women dumb themselves down if they thought their responses would be shown to others. Sweden found that women who took leadership roles in business or politics DOUBLED their chances of divorce. Since the divorce rate in the US is already hovering around 50%… well, let’s just pack it all in now.

The same results were found in a less scientific experiment done a decade ago in a bar by Columbia University: when women were rated by their peers as ambitious, they got fewer dates.

I wish I had an answer. Or several, actually.

Repeat after me all the single ladies: “I will not downplay my ambition or success in order to be more likable.”

Part of the problem is that girls are still taught to be nice and likable above all else, lest we be labeled as a bitch when we get older, and some people are still offended by that term. Personally, if you call me a bitch it tends to mean I’ve firmly made my point and you’re mad that I’m not backing down. Usually, my response is a smile. Besides, name calling means you couldn’t think of anything better with which to respond. I once heard someone say bitch stands for Babe In Total Control of Herself. *Shrugs* could be.

Honestly, a part of me wishes we could work backward and teach girls that being liked should be last on your list of goals. Play nice, yes, but don’t give up because Tommy likes the airhead in the third row. Real men think smart is sexy.  At least, that’s what I tell myself lol.
